  The Beginning

Julia Sunay was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta Canada where she was surrounded by both the visual and performing arts as a child. Julia showed an early interest in music.

She studied the piano with Norma Stang and Ethel Huber, completed her classical music training with the Royal Conservatory of Music and continued to refine her skills in other various musical styles including musical theatre, sacred and opera. 

  Body of Work

Julia is a freelance music director, accompanist and vocal coach based in Toronto.  She has performed as a pianist and accompanist for over twenty years. Accompanying mainly vocalists, she has worked alongside pit orchestras, dancers, singers, choirs and instrumentalists. She has been an accompanist for the Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto Music Festivals and has worked as a resident pianist for several vocal studios across Canada. Julia also works as a private piano teacher. 

While still in school, Julia became heavily involved with the Bands of Calgary, performing with the Calgary Round-Up Band and the Calgary Stetson Show Band. She played mellophone for two years and was appointed drum major in her second year with the Round-Up Band.

In addition to performing and travelling with the band in Canada, the U.S. and Australia, Julia was also selected to represent the band at the Bands of America Summer Symposium, an international collection of the top 1,000 music students held in Normal, Illinois. In recognition of her significant contributions, she was awarded the coveted, “Robert Eklund Trophy” as the top band member for 2000.

  Passion For The Arts

Over the years, Julia developed a strong passion for musical theatre and chose to make it her career choice. Training in all three disciplines of acting, dance and singing, she graduated from Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta in 2005 with a diploma in Musical Theatre performance.  Since then, Julia has worked passionately as a performer, music director and vocal coach.

In 2007, she made her summer stock debut in the United States, performing with The Brewery Follies in Virginia City, Montana. Shortly after, she continued her work at the NASA Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida, where she performed several roles in Mad Mission to Mars and Star Trek Live. Aside from her work in the United States, Julia has completed several Canadian national tours with KOBA Entertainment, a leading live theatrical producer of family and contemporary theatre. Recent tours include Franklin and the Adventure of the Noble Knights, Caillou's Greatest Skate, The Backyardigans: Sea Deep in Adventure and Max and Ruby in the Nutracker Suite.

Currently based out of Toronto, Julia’s passion for the arts has taken her in many directions. Her experience as a dance accompanist has broadened throughout the years, playing for several schools such as the Sean Boutilier Academy of Dance, Martha Hicks School of Ballet and the dance program at York University. Julia also loves to share her knowledge of music, working with students privately and vocal coaching for programs at the Royal Conservatory of Music, the Musical Stage Company, Bravo Academy, Rosedale School of the Performing Arts and Toronto’s own Arts Express. Julia has been a faculty member at the National Music Camp of Canada, where she music directed half a dozen productions and taught musical theatre to hundreds of young performers.  In late 2015, Julia joined Celebrity Cruise Lines, where she performed as a Solo Piano Vocalist, touring all across South America, Antartica and Alaska.  In 2019, Julia joined Norwegian Cruise Lines for two years, where she served as Music Director for the hit Broadway musical Jersey Boys.

  Fitness Guru

Over the years, Julia has also become a huge fitness enthusiast.
In 2009, she completed her personal trainer and group fitness certification with the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) along with her personal training specialist certificate with Can-Fit-Pro, Canada’s largest provider of education in the Canadian fitness industry.
